Renard at the ‘Chef’s Island’ of Gent Smaakt 2019
‘Gent Smaakt!’ is coming back for the ninth edition at the end of May. About twenty restaurateurs from Ghent will give you the best of what our home town has to offer. Renard will also be present, so clear your schedule and keep up to date. Click here to join us at Gent Smaakt!
For the first time, the food festival will feature ‘Chef’s Island’, a place where young talented chefs from Ghent will create small dishes in their unique styles. Chef’s Island is a place where great food meets great drinks: the perfect environment for Renard! Ghent is a culinary paradise boasting an array of cuisines and concepts, from tasty Flemish grub to French fine dining. Here is a list of all participating chefs for ‘Chef’s Island’:
Gilles Bogaert – Taxi’s Restaurant, Zuid
Respect for ingredients and respect for the sea translates into a quirky ‘on-level’ gastronomy where healthy, pure flavours and freshness predominate. North Sea fish stands central here, cooked straight on the grill to accentuate the pureness en freshness of Gilles’ cuisine.
Joël Rammelsberg & Sang-Hoon Degeimbre – San, Brabantdam
Sang-hoon carries the legacy of two Michelin star restaurant L’air du Temps over to a smaller and more approachable concept. SAN is the fusion of simplicity and multicultural cuisine. The only thing you will need for this voyage is a spoon and a bowl.
Thomas Gellynck – Commotie, Zuid
Commotie is a Pop-up by Thomas Gellynck & Lara Devlieger. They offer a pure and innovative kitchen based on food sharing. The slogan ‘Share the food, Dare the drinks’, continues in the bold wines and unique drinks that are served in Commotie.
Karel De Clercq – Karreaux, Henleykaai
Dine in an old tile factory and be surprised by this young, talented team. Karreaux serves gastronomic cuisine with fresh and seasonal ingredients.
Jo Huyge – Bistro Allo, Vrijdagsmarkt
Tradition mixed with innovation when Jo and Arne opened Bistro Allo. A hip French bistro with a fresh decor and a classic menu with a culinary twist.
Sam D’Huyvetter – Pleasures Boutique, Sint-Martens-Latem
Pleasures Boutique is a take-out or eat in food market. The food market offers prepared dishes, healthy breakfast or lunch, and a selection of top ingredients from local producers. Sam is also chef at the recently opened ‘Bar Jeanne’.
Sam Van Houcke – Masté, Tondelier
Tasty food without hassle and no stiffness. Sam wants to make people comfortable here. Casual atmosphere without compromising on quality. Masté is inspired by Scandinavian style, both in terms of interior and in the food.
Ignace Wattenberge – Lys d’Or, Kunstkwartier
Chef Ignace Wattenberge won the title ‘First Chef of Belgium’ in 2018 and will open his own restaurant for the first time this fall. Lys d’Or brings a Belgian-French quality and experimental cuisine in a surprising, artistic context.
